GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - JAN. 16: Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza Strip is witnessing a sharp increase in children suffering from flu and respiratory infections as harsh winter conditions grip the besieged enclave, health officials reported.

The deteriorating health situation among Palestinians living in makeshift tents and damaged buildings has been compounded by prolonged exposure to cold weather, while the closure of border crossings continues to worsen shortages of essential medicines and medical supplies.

Health authorities have issued warnings that children residing in tent camps face life-threatening risks due to inadequate shelter and insufficient heating facilities.

Suheib Abu Hamad, who brought her child to the hospital for treatment, described the severe difficulties of tent life, explaining that her son had been suffering from high fever for several days.

She noted that children in the camps frequently transmit illnesses to one another due to cramped living conditions, adding that survival under such harsh circumstances has become extremely challenging.

Dr. Asaad Nawajha from Nasser Hospital's Pediatrics Department reported that the majority of children admitted to the facility present with symptoms including flu, upper respiratory tract infections, sore throat, persistent cough, and high fever.

He attributed the surge in cases primarily to poor conditions in tent settlements and children's inability to maintain adequate warmth during cold weather. The physician confirmed that numerous children have tragically died as a result of exposure to extreme cold.

According to a statement issued by the Gaza government's Media Office, the low-pressure system and cold wave currently affecting the Gaza Strip have precipitated a humanitarian catastrophe.

The office reported that seven children have died from freezing temperatures since the onset of winter. Since the beginning of the conflict, 24 Palestinians have lost their lives due to severe cold, with 21 of the victims being children.
