Distressing video shows plight of the mentally ill in rural India
A shocking video exposes the plight of the mentally ill in rural India.
A young woman was tied up and dragged through the streets by her family members who thought she was ‘possessed’.
Ellavva Bai, 20, was spotted with her hands tied with rope on a street in Athani town in South India. She was led by her sister who said Ellavva had been possessed and was being taken to a witchdoctor for treatment.
The sister said Ellavva had been taken over by an evil spirit, which had made her ill and behave erratically. A family member had gone ahead to speak to the witchdoctor, she added.
The two sisters were intercepted by passers-by who tried to persuade the sister to release Ellavva. Prabhu Hiremath, who was at the spot said, “The sister walked away with the victim, who was speaking incoherently.”
The police, who were alerted, later tracked down Ellavva’s home. They were shocked to find Ellavva tied up by the feet as well and made to lie down. The family members insisted that they had no other choice as it was difficult to manage Ellavva.

The police shifted Ellavva to a local government hospital for treatment.
The poverty-stricken nomadic family had moved to Athani recently and was not educated, said local media reports.
According to estimates, India has only 5,000 psychiatrists and less than 2,000 clinical psychologists working in a population of around 1.3 billion.
