Big lizard aggressively strikes at large eagle in self defence

The footage shows an encounter between a martial eagle, the largest eagle in Africa, and a monitor lizard which is the largest lizard in Africa. It was during a safari in the Kruger National Park when we came across a juvenile martial eagle sitting in the long grass. The large raptor was very interested in something lying in the grass. We realized that the bird was staring at a large rock monitor lizard. Martial eagles are powerful hunters and are known to hunt prey that ranges from small antelope, monkeys, and hares while they specialise in hunting monitor lizards which is their favourite prey. This juvenile martial eagle was still very inexperienced and did not really know how to go about hunting the large lizard lying in the grass. The uncertain and nervous behaviour of the eagle is evident in the footage as the immature raptor tries to figure out how to get hold of this delicious looking meal right in front of it. The eagle decides to approach the lizard straight on, which turned the monitor into the aggressive and dangerous reptile it can be. Feeling threatened, the lizard suddenly opens its mouth and charges towards the eagle aggressively. The eagle realizes the danger and keeps a safe distance while attempting to circle the reptile. Immediately after its first aggressive warning, the monitor lizard strikes again at the eagle this time leaping through the air towards the cautious bird. After this incident the inexperienced martial eagle realized that this lizard was not going to be any easy prey and finally left the lizard in peace.
