Stray elephant calf chases villagers and overturns bikes in Odisha, India
A four-month-old elephant calf that got strayed from its herd was captured chasing people and overturning bikes using its trunk in Orissa, India on May 4.
The calf was left wandering in the Dangamala village, Chendipada, and in its panic, scared villagers away and tipped bikes while trying to find its herd.
Later, a rescue team from the forest department attempted to reunite her with the herd. But as the calf was reluctant to go back to the forest, they shifted her to the Forest Rangers’ College at Angul.
A senior forest officer Sudarsan Panda said: “The elephant calf is being treated by local veterinary doctors. "If she is not well, we will treat her. If she is OK, we will try to send her back to the herd.”
Human-elephant interaction is common in the corridor as Chendipada forest is located nearby the village. Locals are informed to remain alert
to any elephant movement is seen in the area.
