Baby elephant that fell 30ft into farm well, rescued after 5-hour operation and reunited with mum
A baby elephant that strayed from its herd and fell into a 30-feet deep farm well in Ramgarh, located in the eastern state of Jharkhand, was rescued after a five-hour long operation.
According to forest department officials, a group of about 11 elephants invaded the farms near Gosi village on Sunday night. The baby elephant, which was part of the herd, fell into the well as the villagers started chasing them away with fire torches.
After chasing away the rest of the herd, the people returned to the village. But soon their peace of mind was broken by the cries of the calf that had fallen in the well.
Anticipating that the herd might come back to rescue the calf, no one dared to venture near the well. It was only in the morning they went near the well and saw the calf struggling to come out of it.
They immediately informed the forest department officials. The rescue team arrived at the scene armed with a JCB machine.
The operation continued for around five hours during which the one side of the well was broken and a slope was made for the elephant to climb out.
The hardworking of the forest rangers bore fruit and the calf was rescued successfully from the well. It was then taken to the jungle and reunited with the herd where its mother was eagerly waiting for the baby.
