A lost stag wandered through the streets of a north Indian city after being injured and running into a busy market, prompting a rescue effort that sadly ended with the animal's death.

The busy Sector 22-C area in Chandigarh, Punjab state was interrupted by the injured stag yesterday (February 4), which ran past rescuers trying to catch it with a net.

The narrow patch between the showrooms and the houses was filled with onlookers as the fearful animal tried to find a way out. A team from the forest department got a call at 9:19 am and reached the spot within minutes, armed with only a giant yellow net.

With people shouting in excitement, the animal got more scared and started running helter-skelter even as the rescue team tried to soothe him. It finally walked into the net but only after the rescue team was out of breath.

Although the animal was rescued by 9:40 am, the deer succumbed to its injuries during treatment, according to officials, who determined it was a full-grown animal, probably between 10 and 15 years old.
