Motorists and passersby were taken by surprise after they spotted a massive crocodile sun-bathing on a bridge by an arterial highway in southern India.

The incident took place on National Highway-44 at Dusgaon village on September 21 in Nizamabad district, Telangana state.

Villagers and some motorists attempted to rescue it, but were intimidated by its sheer size and decided to inform forest department officials.

However, some villagers organised an earthmover and tried to capture the beast with a JCB’s bucket.

The callous approach to capture the crocodile irked the wildlife activists in the area. But before the rookie rescuer could do any further damage, the forest staffers took over and caught the crocodile with the help of ropes.

Later, the forest officials released the crocodile into the Godavari, the waterbody from where it had crawled out.

Due to heavy inflows and muddy water, crocodiles sometimes come out from the river and scale the nearby bridge, officials said, warning local farmers and people to be vigilant.
