An ongoing legal struggle between refugees and the South African government in Cape Town has seen protesters mass outside the city's High Court to await the latest verdict.

The courtroom was packed to capacity with refugees who wait to hear their fate, while protesters outside made chants against xenophobia in South Africa.

Since October the refugees who initially occupied the building housing the UNHCR have been occupying the streets and open area around the Cape Town Central Methodist Church.

The City of Cape Town, represented by Advocate Con Joubert, approached the High Court for an order that will impact the future of refugees living on Greenmarket Square and the surrounding streets.

During the proceedings presiding Judge Daniel Thulani questioned where the refugees will be taken. Judgement will be handed down on the 17th of February 2020.
