This is the heartbreaking moment a grieving mother dog tried to bring her dead puppy back to life by digging it out of a grave.

Three-year-old Labrador mix, Kookie, gave birth in Zamboanga, the Philippines. The next day, owner Kaye de Luna and her family woken by Kookie's loud barks early in the morning. They checked on her and saw that one of her puppies, the weakest of the group, was already dead.

Kaye had buried the dead pup in their backyard, but just a few hours later, they went for a walk and Kookie walked over to the unmarked grave. She then started frantically digging up her dead baby.

Footage shows how Kookie used her unrelenting maternal instincts to scratch at the surface of the grave.

She finally removed enough dirt to reach into the hole and pull out the lifeless puppy in her mouth.

Kookie then licks and nudes the pup, but to no avail.

Kaye can be heard sobbing in the background as she watches the heartbreaking scene unfold in her garden.

She said: "The first time that Kookie was pregnant, she miscarried. Now, a puppy has died. She must be devastated.

''It is really sad for her. We could see how much she cared about all of her litter. Even the one that died she was still thinking about him.''
