Officials conduct awareness programme ahead of Cyclone Nisarga landfall in western India's Maharashtra
At least 15 teams belonging to the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been pressed into service in western India's Maharashtra, a day before a severe cyclonic storm, Nisarga, is expected to make landfall.
Visuals from several parts of the state showed officials conducting aerial and land surveys and communicating with locals about the impending calamity.
The storm is presently brewing in the Arabian Sea near Lakshadweep Islands and is expected to make landfall near Alibaug town in Maharashtra.
Earlier, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Palghar district and orange alert for Mumbai and Thane.
According to reports, among the 15 NDRF teams- four teams have been deployed in Raigad, three teams in Mumbai, two each in Palghar, Thane, Ratnagiri and one each in Sindhudurg and Navi Mumbai.
Apart from these, the Indian defense will have kept five rescue teams with Gemini boats on standby for civil assistance.
The teams will be deployed as and when requested by the state government or the district officials in the required area.
The NDRF teams were seen conducting an awareness programme in Datiwade area in Palghar, survey in Shrivardhan area in Raigad.
Apart from these, Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ships, aircraft and shore stations were also seen warning fishermen and boats to come back to the shore to prevent any untowards incident during the calamity.
The storm will pass between Harihareshwar in Raigad of Maharashtra and Daman of Gujarat.
The development comes just a fortnight after Cyclone Amphan battered neighbouring eastern Indian states of West Bengal and Odisha on May 20.
The storm left a trail of devastation in Kolkata, formerly Calcutta, the state capital of West Bengal.
The impact of so intense that civilians experienced power outages for nearly 10 days in some parts of the state. They were also hit by the lack of drinking water, while thousands of homes were destroyed.
