Curious old ‘Dagga Boy’ Buffalo watches us – grass in mouth and covered in biting flies

African Savanna Buffaloes (Syncerus caffer) are one of Africa’s most dangerous large mammals and are famous for their unpredictable temperament. Bulls can weigh up to about 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds), and feed mainly on grass although they may browse shrubs in times of drought. When calm, African Savanna Buffaloes are very curious. This old bull is known as a ‘Dagga Boy’ – a slang term for a bull who has left the breeding herd in his old age. ‘Dagga’ refers either to mud or to being crazy. Despite his formidable reputation, he stood quietly by the roadside on a hot late afternoon in Kruger National Park, watching us, grass hanging from his mouth while blood-sucking flies called clegs swarmed around his face, neck and chest. He frequently flapped his ears to repel them.
