The NEHAWU (National Education Health and Allied Workers Union), the largest public-sector union in South Africa, has threatened to withdraw support for the ruling African National Congress (ANC) in next year's local government election if the ANC controlled government does not meet its demands on September 14.

NEHAWU wants the government to honor the final part of a 3 year wage agreement signed with the government, to which the government has failed to respond and claiming that it doesn't have the money too do so. The union also wants the government to better supply personal protective equipment to health workers in the frontline of the fight to contain the COVID 19 pandemic which has economically crippled the country since it went into lockdown in March.

NEHAWU's secretary-general, Zola Saphetha, addressed the media after the National Executive Committee of the union met over the weekend. Saphetha also announced the union's members would be holding lunchtime pickets until a date for a national strike is announced, subject to the outcome of their negotiations with government.
