Drowning horse rescued after being swept away by floods in Thailand
This is the heartwarming moment a drowning horse was rescued after she was washed away by flash floods.
The chestnut mare was being raised at a nearby farm when heavy downpours caused a river to burst its banks and submerge homes in Nakhon Ratchasima, northeastern Thailand
Rescue teams who were patrolling the area on lifeboats looking for survivors and to evacuate residents when they found the 19-year-old filly trapped under the muddy water on November 2.
The team saw the horse, named Cherry, struggling to move in the deluge while trying to keep her head above water to breathe.
They rushed to save Cherry by tying a rope around her neck so they could pull it to higher ground because it was too heavy to carry in the lifeboat.
One of the workers pulling the horse can be heard encourage it by saying: "Come here, sweetheart. Just swim and follow us."
At first, the weary nag was confused about what to do but she eventually followed the boat while another team of rescuers rode behind to make sure she was safe and didn't break free.
Head rescuer, Tong, said they spent more than two hours saving the horse, which would have drowned without being helped.
He said: "If we reached the horse just a few minutes later than we did, she would have been dead. It was difficult to rescue her because of the strong currents and her size.''
The horse was walked through knee-deep water back to the village and handed it to the farm staff, who gave her food and checked for injuries. They said Cherry was not hurt after the ordeal.
Tong added: ''Cherry's is only kept as a pat on the farm. She's too old to work, so she can relax now after all the stress.''
Thailand has suffered severe floods in recent weeks. Officials said that nine people have been killed with two missing. More than 100,000 households have been evacuated.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said Nakhon Ratchasima and Suphan Buri provinces are still dealing with floods.
Thailand's annual rainy season lasts from June to November and brings heavy downpours and flooding. Cambodia has also been severely hit this year along with Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.
