A pet dog almost ended up as a snake's supper when it stepped on the reptile's back as it crossed a road.

The hapless pooch failed to notice the 8ft-long deadly python stretched out across the tarmac in Bangkok, Thailand, on November 10.

Footage shows how the oblivious dog plonked its paw onto the serpent's scaly back before looking down with a jolt and quickly scampering away.

The snake shuddered and reared its head but appeared to have already eaten and did not react aggressively to the dog.

Onlooker Kesorn Rittichai said she was driving home when she noticed the snake and slammed the brakes.

She then climbed out of the car and recorded the creature with her phone while waiting for it to pass when she captured the dog wandering over - unaware of the predator in its path.

Kesorn added: "The dog wasn't paying attention to where it was walking. It was lucky. There are many times that pythons have eaten cats and dogs.

''The dog knew not to mess with the snake. Its surprised reaction was funny. I couldn't help laughing at the dog."

The meek reptile did not bite the dog, which disappeared into an alley a few steps behind the car.

The woman then informed the villagers about the reptile so they can keep their animals locked up.
