Residents retreated to a school building after their homes were submerged in chest-deep floods in the Philippines during tropical depression Vicky on Friday (December 18).

Albert Pamonag, who lives nearby, said they were shocked when the water suddenly rose in Rosario, Agusan del Sur on Friday afternoon.

He said: ''There were children with us when it happened. We were praying that the water didn't reach the building.''

Storm Vicky battered several provinces in the southern Philippines with flash floods and landslides forcing mass evacuations.

The storm made landfall in Davao Oriental, but the weather state bureau said Vicky is expected to continue to dump rain until Sunday (Dec 20).
