Homes were submerged in waist-deep floods on New Year’s Day in the Philippines.

Che Paloma Sombe said their holiday celebration was halted when the waters started to rise early morning on January 1, a few hours after the countdown.

She said: ‘We were supposed to have a small party at home to celebrate the new year but we had to secure our belongings submerged in the water.’

Rescuers were deployed to affected villages and some residents were taken to evacuation centres when the water in the river reached their homes.

There were no reported casualties from the flash flood and the residents were allowed to return to their homes the next day (January 2) as the weather condition improved
