Flash floods surged through homes as residents battled to save animals.

Footage shows a fast-flowing deluge that cascaded into a neighbourhood as locals tried to evacuate a buffalo to higher ground in East Java, Indonesia, on January 9.

Authorities reported four houses were swept away by the water, eight others damaged, and farmland.

The National Disaster Management Agency said the flash flood was caused by heavy rainfall that broke Peh River from Mount Argopuro.

Centre for Disaster Data, Information and Communication chief Abdul Muhari said on January 10: 'This caused river water to overflow into residential areas in Peh Hamlet RT 20 RW 5. This incident had no casualties, but 12 houses were damaged, and 200 people were affected.

The chief added they urged locals and personnel on duty always to be alert to the potential risk of subsequent flash floods.

He said: 'If it rains heavily for more than an hour, residents are advised to evacuate to a safer place.'
