Summer storms damaged dozens of buildings in northern Thailand this week.

Strong winds smashed into villages in Nakhon Ratchasima province damaging 56 homes and large swathes of agricultural land on May 17 evening. Several crop storage containers were also destroyed by the storm and the debris fell into the rice fields.

The local government is now evaluating the damage before requesting subsidies from the Ministry of Finance.

Farmer Krueng Kongthungmon, 62, said: ‘The storms ripped my entire room from my house and later broke all my belongings on the second floor.

‘I was one of the farmers whose mills were destroyed and the rains damaged all the rice that was stored inside.’

Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia and Indonesia are approaching their tropical monsoon rainy season. Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods.
