Roads swamped as monsoon rains batter the Philippines
Roads were swamped as monsoon rains, strengthened by a low-pressure area, battered west-central Philippines on Monday.
Footage shows residents of Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro province wading through knee-deep, muddy floodwaters amid the downpour on October 25. Small vehicles had trouble passing through the road while the flood also invaded establishments and homes in the area. Locals have blamed clogged drainage systems in the village for the rise in water level.
State weather agency PAGASA had raised an orange rainfall warning in Oriental Mindoro last Sunday morning, forecasting intense rains brought by the low-pressure area embedded in the Intertropical Convergence Zone.
The Philippines and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand are in the middle of their tropical monsoon rainy season, which lasts until October or November. Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods.
