Concrete pillar collapses during high-speed track demolition in Indonesia
This is the moment a large concrete pillar collapsed and hit heavy equipment during a demolition in Indonesia.
Four excavators were being used to dismantle the concrete pier when the structure toppled over in Karawang Regency in West Java on December 8.
The pier was part of a high-speed train construction project in Indonesia. Authorities said it was being demolished because of an error in the installation point.
President Director of PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC), Dwiyana Slamet Riyadi, said in a statement: ‘The incident occurred due to the contractor’s negligence in carrying out standard operating procedures for pier dismantling.
‘We have called the contractor and we have given a warning so that all work is carried out according to the SOP.’
He added that there were no victims in the incident as the excavator operators managed to escape before they could be crushed by the falling pillar.
The high-speed railway project in Indonesia was implemented under a consortium of Indonesian and Chinese state-owned companies.
It is planned to be built with a track length of 142 kilometres, connecting Indonesian capital Jakarta and Bandung City. The railway is expected to cut travel time from three hours to about 40 minutes, and is envisioned to operate by the end of 2022.
