Waves sink berthed passenger ship as Tropical Storm Megi hits the Philippines
Powerful waves sank a passenger ship that was berthed at a pier in Cebu province as Tropical Storm Megi lashed the Philippines on Sunday, April 10.
Footage shows the flooded interior of the MV Mika Mari 1 as the harsh waves slammed into it and filled it with water. It was later seen submerged at the Consuelo Port in Cebu province's Camotes island in the afternoon.
Captain Alvin Dagalea of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Cebu Station said the ship's 14 crew members managed to escape before it sank. The PCG is now assessing the risk of oil spills as the vessel was reportedly carrying around 5,430 litres of diesel fuel and 68 litres of lube oil.
Tropical Storm Megi, locally known as Agaton, made landfall in Guiuan municipality, Eastern Samar at 7:30 am on Sunday with maximum sustained winds of up to 75 kilometres per hour.
Local weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration said that Megi has weakened but still poses a threat, packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometres per hour. It is set to make a second landfall as it tracks west-northwest towards Eastern Leyte.
As of Sunday afternoon, some 1,419 passengers returning to their provinces for the country's Holy Week were stranded in ports due to the inclement weather, the Philippine Coast Guard said.
