Policeman records high-speed motorcycle chase pursuing suspect
This is the intense, movie-like moment a cop chased a motorcycle rider who refused to stop.
Police Sergeant Krislam Baguil, 33, was making his rounds when he noticed the man riding without a helmet and license plate in Tagbilaran City, Bohol province, the Philippines on May 4.
When he spotted the motorist appearing to be violating traffic safety rules, he sounded his horn and shouted for the driver to stop, but the suspect allegedly stepped on the gas pedal and tried to flee from him.
Krislam quickly followed in hot pursuit, but the motorcyclist was unrelenting and kept on speeding across the dusty road, nearly colliding into other cars in the process.
When the policeman finally caught up with him, the bold driver made a last-ditch attempt at escape. He kicked his motorcycle towards Krislam to disorient him before sprinting away into a nearby alley.
However, on foot, the man was no match for the trained officer, who closed the distance within seconds despite crashing on the road.
The runaway offender was identified as 31-year-old Mark Gervin Sarmiento Culajara. He was arrested for not wearing a helmet, and for driving an unregistered vehicle without a license plate. He was later fined for the two offences as well as failing to stop for a policeman.
Krislam later earned praise from his superiors and colleagues for his impressive display of heroism and bravery.
Police Brigadier General Roque Eduardo Vega, Regional Office 7 police chief, said: 'In the PNP (Philippine National Police) service, there will be many instances that your patience in the performance of your duty will be put to a test, especially in responding to situations similar to that.
'Always follow the PNP Operational Procedures, our bible, and you will never go wrong. In everything we do, we put our heart into it and to the people, we owe to serve and protect.'
Krislam joined the Tagbilaran police station's Motorcycle Anti-Street Operatives back in 2016. He said he made it a point to record arrests with his camera for evidence.
He said: 'At work as a police officer, we really observe maximum tolerance. Safety and presence of mind are also important when responding to emergencies. This is part of our oath and heavy responsibility to fulfill our service and take care of our mandate.'
