A lucky hyena managed to escape the jaws of a lion after it had stolen an impala kill from a leopard.

Tristan Masterton was on a tour through Sabi Sands, South Africa, when he found a big cat with an impala in its grasp.

Dramatic footage shows a trio of hyenas fighting over the stolen meal before one of the clan was tackled to the ground by a huge male lion.

Despite being caught in the lion’s powerful jaws for more than two minutes, the hyena managed to wriggle free of its grasp and escape to safety.

Tristan said: “It was an adrenaline rush, everything seemed to happen so fast. I thought the lion was going to kill the hyena but was relieved when it made a getaway.

“I’ve been a wildlife photographer for 10 years and never seen anything like this before. It was definitely a once in a lifetime sighting.

“The lion surprised the hyena and stormed out of the bushes and grabbed it with its front paws and then bit down on its neck.

“The lion had the hyena in its clutches for just over a minute. It was left with some bite marks on its neck, but seemed okay. They are incredibly resilient animals.”
