Dozens of blacktip sharks burst out of the sea like fireworks hunting thousands of fish
Dozens of hungry sharks burst out of the sea like fireworks while hunting millions of fish mere metres from a beach.
Paul Dabill was flying his drone over Florida’s annual "Fall Mullet Run" on September 25 when blacktip sharks made the most of the bountiful seafood buffet around them. Paul has been flying drones for two years and has been taking videos and pictures of marine life in the area for over 10 years.
Mesmerising drone footage - viewed more than 550,000 times – showed the predators leaping out of the surface of the Atlantic Ocean and crashing back into their meal.
The aerial view showed the mullet trying to escape their hunters by clearing paths through the school before resorting to jumping out of the water to avoid becoming fish food.
Paul, from Jupiter, Florida, said: “I was excited to see it and especially excited to be able to film it with my drone. I recorded the activity for 25 minutes. This particular session stood out as there were many more sharks than I usually see. Often there are only four or five sharks but this time there were dozens of them".
He also said: "There were dozens of blacktip sharks. There were millions of mullets in the school. This school was not very long but it was dense with fish. Schools migrate along the Florida coast this time of year in September and early October. They slowly move down the coastline along the shore.
Paul explains that: “They also come into the inlets and the intracoastal waterway. During this migration, they are hunted by many predators including blacktip sharks, tarpon, snook, jack crevalle, bluefish, and barracuda. I filmed this video in 25 minutes but I am sure the sharks were hunting them for a couple of hours before they likely entered the Jupiter Inlet about one mile south of where I filmed".
