elson Mandela’s grandson and tribal heir, Mandla Mandela, led a protest by the ANC (African National Congress)parliamentary caucus against the release on parole of Janusz Walus. Walus is a Polish immigrant who has been in prison since 1994 for the murder of SA Communist Party leader Chris Hani in 1993. Walus was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment together with Conservative Party member of parliament Clive Derby-Lewis. Derby-Lewis was paroled in 2016 and died soon thereafter.

Walus was due to be paroled on Thursday 1 December but has instead been hospitalised with stab wounds sustained in an attack by a fellow inmate yesterday (Tuesday 29 November). Walus, a Polish immigrant, had his SA citizenship revoked in 2017. However, the Deportment of Home Affairs has approved his residence status in order for him to serve out his 2 year parole in the country and not be deported.
