A lucky wildebeest survived two crocodile attacks after swimming directly into the predator while taking a break from a river crossing.

Francis Kijazi was leading a tour through the Serengeti, Tanzania, while thousands of wildebeest made the annual migration across the Mara River.

Dramatic footage captured the moment one of the animals dived into the water for a rest only to float directly into the path of a camouflaged crocodile.

Having miraculously escaped one set of jaws, the wildebeest was chased down by another crocodile but managed to avoid becoming dinner for a second time before getting away.

Francis said: “I had absolutely no idea the crocodile was there, it looked like a log floating at first. No wonder the wildebeest didn’t see it either.

“The wildebeest was only going into the shallow part of the river for a rest before trying to join the others with the crossing again.

“The first attack had the wildebeest underwater for 20 seconds while the second lasted for 40 seconds in total.

“It was all very exciting. It is not often that you get to see action like this during the migration crossings.”
