1 dead in Racine police shooting after fleeing traffic stop, firing at officers; Hiding in the grass

1 person is dead after a police shooting in Racine Wisconsin on Monday, May 22 around 12:15 am.

Starting in the evening of Sunday, May 21st Mount Pleasant Wisconsin officers received a call for shots fired.

A few hours later Racine police conducted a traffic stop with the driver fleeing on foot and hiding in tall grass near Clayton Park.

Using a loudspeaker, officers commanded the subject to come out. The person refused to come out and fired shots at officers, who struck the subject. Reports of 30-40 gunshots were exchanged. The person was pronounced deceased at the scene.

DCI is leading this investigation and is assisted by the Racine County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin State Patrol, Wisconsin State Crime Lab and a DCI Crime Response Specialist. All involved law enforcement are fully cooperating with DCI during this investigation.

Officers from the Racine and Mount Pleasant have been placed on administrative assignment.

No law enforcement officers were injured in this incident.
