An Austrian tourist suffered severe injuries after plunging from the second floor of an airport in Thailand.

Tina Monika, 35, had allegedly climbed over a metal barrier next to the taxi drop-off area ar the Suvarnabhumi International Airport passenger terminal in Bangkok before throwing herself from the building on Monday evening, June 19.

Shocked tourists watched as she hit the ground some 25ft below.

Police stationed at the airport received a report at around 9 pm and went to the scene with medics and a rescue team.

They found the female tourist lying near a pillar and some gratings at the airport's passenger pick-up area. Tina was unconscious but alive.

Police Major Uthen Prabprim said: 'The woman was having breathing difficulties and seizures. Both of her legs were also broken. She was rushed to the Samitivej Hospital because her injuries were quite serious. We do not know yet why she fell from the building.'

Investigators said they were reviewing CCTV footage and investigating Tina's background to find the cause of her fall. Officers were also contacting the Austrian Embassy in Thailand to inform her relatives.

The airport has a history of tourists plunging from its ledges and walkways.

In March 2017, Australian-Finnish national Alan Paul Grimes, 32, reportedly jumped to his death from the fourth floor of the same airport.

While in October 2019, Finnish tourist Jurisoo Timo fell from the building's sixth floor and landed on the fourth storey. He was conscious and rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
