Cape Town, 28 July 2023: Residents of Overcome Heights, an informal settlement lodged between the gang infested township of Lavender Hill and the Capricorn Business Park, took the streets early this morning to protest a lack of service delivery in the settlement. They disrupted early morning traffic on Prince George Drive (M5) by burning tyres. Public order police arrived and pushed them back by firing rubber bullets.

Karen Mentoor, a community activist in the area, said they were protesting because they felt their community was being overlooked for service delivery by the City of Cape Town and alleged that DA ward councillor Mandy Marr said she wouldn’t meet with the community as the had nothing to do with Overcome Heights.

A young boy by the name of Winston Isaacs was injured when he was hit as the back of his neck allegedly by a rubber bullet. The boy was visibly injured with blood running out of his neck wound.

The community said they were giving authorities until Tuesday to respond top their demands. Their demands include proper sewerage services, serviced roads, housing, electricity and water.
