The South African Parliament voted earlier today to fire the graft ombudsman after a section 194 committee found her guilty of misconduct and incompetence. The committee recommended her removal from office.

This is the first time in the history of the country that a head of a section 9 institution is removed in this manner. Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has been marred with controversy and politically charged investigations since taking office just under seven years ago. She initially charged in 2021 after parliament adopted a motion.

Earlier today, the ruling ANC party , Democratic Alliance , Inkatha Freedom Party, FFplus and the ACDP voted for her removal whilst the Economic Freedom Fighters ( EFF) , UDM and Al Jamah voter against her removal.

With more than 75 % of the lawmakers voting for her removal Mkhwebane will now lose her multi million gratuity that would have been paid should she have completed her seven year term.
