A huge python flushed out by flash floods was found taking shelter in a grocery store in Cambodia.

Footage shows a shopkeeper grabbing with bare hands the 12ft-long reptile that was found hiding under the shelves in Phnom Penh on June 25.

It tried to resist the grip of the locals but was easily carried out into the streets before being placed inside a sack.

Onlooker Chhiyi Chhat said the animal slithered out from the drain and entered the establishment.

She said: 'The road was flooded after the rain, so I think the snake was just trying to hide somewhere dry and safe. My boyfriend later got rid of the snake.'

The reticulated python is found throughout Southeast Asia, where they live in forests, swamps, canals and even in cities, causing them to come into conflict with humans. The species is one of the world's largest snakes and can eat humans, cats, dogs, birds, rats and other snakes.

Cambodia and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
