Norwegian national stabs to death off-duty police officer who attempted to break up fight in pub in Greece
A 44-year-old Norwegian national, arrested for the murder of a 32-year-old off-duty Greek Police officer at a beer house in the northern port city of Thessaloniki, appeared before a prosecutor on Friday 29.12.2023. Footage filmed on Friday noon shows the 44-year-old Norwegian being taken to the courts of Thessaloniki while wearing a bulletproof vest. Footage also shows police investigators collecting evidence outside the bar where the murder took place.
While leaving the courts, the accused was confronted by passers-by (timestamp 00:55) while a man told the journalists "If I had the power to lynch him I would. He killed the policeman for no reason at all" (timestamp 01:10)
The incident occurred between 4 and 5 a.m. on Thursday (28/12) at a bar located right next to a police station. The off-duty officer reportedly intervened to stop a fight over a “trivial matter” between his best man and the 44-year-old. The assailant fatally stabbed the officer in the throat and used the same knife to injure the policeman’s best man in the lower limbs.
According to the case file, the murder weapon was a push dagger. Police sources indicated that the knife in question qualifies as a “concealed weapon” as it is designed to be held in the hand with a closed palm.
