Exotic bird that looks like 'How to Train Your Dragon' character rescued from condo balcony in Thailand
An exotic bird that looks like a character from the DreamWorks film 'How to Train Your Dragon' was rescued from a resident's balcony in Thailand.
The great-eared nightjar had landed on Katry Somsaman's balcony and was found by a janitor cleaning the condominium in Bangkok on December 27.
Cleaners and security guards tried to catch the bird to bring it to a vet, but it still managed to escape from them despite its weakened state.
After several failed attempts to corner the elusive avian, Katry finally called wildlife officials for assistance.
They captured the nightjar, which resembled the night fury dragon 'Toothless' from the DreamWorks movie - with its fluffy ear tufts on the sides of its head - and handed it over to the veterinary team of the Wildlife Conservation Office.
Vets said the bird was not sick, but suffered exhaustion flying amid skyscrapers in Bangkok.
Thachapan Leelapta, veterinarian at the Wildlife Clinic The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Flora, said: 'The bird had no wounds on its body. Its bones are not broken, but it was tired and weak and has not eaten since it was found.'
The nightjar will be given vitamins and is expected to recover after several days. It will be freed into its natural habitat.
Katry's husband Kritsachai Somsaman wrote online: 'I was also sad to part with the bird. Even if we only spent a short time together, I have grown attached.
'I hope it lives a long life in the wild once it is freed.'
The Great Eared Nightjar (Lyncornis macrotis) is a nocturnal bird species found in parts of Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Myanmar, and Malaysia. It is known for its distinctive large ear tufts that give it its name.
This nightjar is typically found in dense forests and is recognized for its cryptic plumage, which aids in camouflage during the daytime when it roosts on the forest floor.
