A huge elephant has been spotted with a huge hole in the base of its trunk.

Perdita Luebbe-Scheurmann was on safari in Sabi Sands, South Africa, at the end of 2023 when she spotted a very unusual animal.

Fascinating footage shows the female elephant wandering near a waterhole showing off a massive gap in the base of her trunk, just below her eyeline.

The hole is believed to be a congenital condition which means the elephant was born with it and manages to live a happy and healthy life.

Perdita said: “I have been travelling to Africa for safaris for years and I haven’t seen anything like this before.

“It was so easy to spot the hole in her trunk, even from the distance we were watching her from.

“She appears to have been born with the condition but has happily grown to adulthood despite it.

“She didn’t appear to be in any pain and it didn’t stop her from drinking. She is obviously used to living with it for years.”
