This is the dramatic moment a religious monument toppled over during a procession in India - miraculously missing dozens of devotees below.

Worshippers had spent months painstakingly building the 120ft tall chariot for a Hindu ceremony at the Huskur Madduramma temple in Bangalore on Saturday afternoon.

But while the shrine was being pulled by ox-carts, it snagged on an overhead electricity cable and began to wobble.

Video footage captured the statue crashing to the ground as followers dived out of the way. Miraculously, they all escaped injury.

Locals said thousands of devotees from 15 surrounding villages had attended the event. They managed to drag the chariot to its destination where they continued the Hindu ceremony.

The Madduramma temple in the Huskuru district has become known in recent years for its huge pagoda-type chariots, locally known as Kurju, which are pulled to temples from the surrounding regions. The ceremony dates back more than 500 years, but its popularity has been declining.
