A snake emerged on the street during water fight festival in Thailand.

Footage shows the 12ft-long python slithering on the wet asphalt ground while locals sprayed it with a hose in Chonburi province on April 21.

The serpent sighting happened the day after the Songkran Buddhist New Year celebrations, which see locals splash each other with water.

Onlooker Saifah Nattakhrit said: 'I guess the snake was attracted to the water because it was really hot that day. I don't know where it had come from.'

The Buddhist festival Songkran, which takes place every year from April 13 to April 15, marks the new calendar year in the ancient religion. It originated in India in the 6th century before being taken up by the Hindu-Buddhist Khmer Empire - the predecessor to modern-day Cambodia.

Followers splash each other with water to wash away the sins and bad luck of the past year. Traditionally, young relatives would pour water over the hands and feet of elders as a mark of respect.

The reticulated python is found throughout Southeast Asia, where they live in forests, swamps, canals and even in cities, causing them to come into conflict with humans. The species is one of the world's largest snakes and can eat humans, cats, dogs, birds, rats and other snakes.
