This is the terrifying moment a helicopter spun out of control while landing in India this morning.

The A119 Koala chopper was carrying six pilgrims to visit a temple when it began rotating violently while approaching the Kedarnath helipad for landing in Uttarakhand.

The skilled pilot regained control of the aircraft, preventing a potential tragedy at the Himalayan temple.

CCTV footage shows how it was just 25 metres away from the helipad when it went into a tailspin. The pilot successfully executed an emergency landing on the nearby grass.

Ground staff rushed towards the aircraft once it had managed to land safely.

Reports indicate that a technical issue with the rear motor of the helicopter prompted the emergency landing.

Saurabh Gaharwar, the district magistrate of Rudraprayag, said the helicopter departed from the Sirsi helipad en route to Kedarnath.

He said the passengers and crew were shaken by the incident but unharmed. They have since returned home after visiting the temple.

Operating under the callsign VT-CLR, the helicopter owned by Kestrel Aviation, has been facilitating pilgrimages to Kedarnath for several years.
