Diver films alien-like pyrosome swaying with motion of ocean currents
A diver found an alien-like creature made up of thousands of organisms floating in the ocean.
Javi Benavides was swimming at a depth of eight metres off the coast of Las Palmas, Spain, on June 8 when he came across a pyrosome.
Mesmerising footage captured the creature – sometimes known as a sea pickle – swaying with the motions of the ocean.
Javi said: “I have been a diver for more than 20 years now and this is only the second time I have come across a pyrosome.
“It is not common to see it. It was mesmerising to watch it move with the currents.”
Pyrosomes are free-floating colonies of tiny organisms called zooids that are typically found near the surface in warm waters.
Each zooid is just a few millimetres in size, but the creatures can embed themselves into a gelatinous tunic.
