Taal Volcano belches gas causing volcanic smog
Taal Volcano belched gas and caused volcanic smog in Batangas province, the Philippines, on September 12.
Footage shows a smoke plume rising out of the volcano's main crater at 7am local time. Locals and tourists said the smoke and ash obscured the sky and caused overcast conditions later in the morning.
State seismological agency PHIVOLCS said in a September 12 bulletin that there was a 'weak' emission, with gas plumes reaching up to 2,000 feet. The volcano had been emitting 4,213 tonnes of sulfur per day since September 11.
Volcanic smog also shrouded the province days earlier amid another sulfur dioxide emission on Monday, September 9.
The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands inside the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcano eruptions and earthquakes happen.
