Residents used plastic chairs to cross a flooded street outside their homes.

Footage shows the neighbours alternately standing on two monobloc seats so they could move through the deluge with their clothes dry in Manila, the Philippines, on July 27.

The flood had reached 4ft (1.2 metres) high and the locals were stranded in their homes, requiring them to wade through dirty water to go to the store for essentials.

Marie Faye Acepcion, who was watching her neighbours from the balcony, said: 'It happened during Typhoon Gaemi. The floods are becoming severe as years pass.'

Typhoon Gaemi originated in the Philippines, triggering landslides and floods that killed 34. It headed to Taiwan and killed at least 22 before reaching Hunan, China where 30 deaths were recorded and dozens of others missing.

The Philippines and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are at the start of their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms. The rudimentary infrastructure often struggles with the deluge, leading to widespread flash floods.
