STORYLINE:

Fortescue Metals Group Ltd., one of the largest iron ore producers in Australia, is seeking green transition through enduring partnerships with China.

It is building the Christmas Creek Green Metal Project to produce green metal on a commercial scale in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

Production is scheduled to begin in late 2025.

Using renewable energy and with near zero carbon emissions, the facility is expected to deliver more than 1,500 tonnes of green metal annually once fully operational.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): ELLIE COATES, Director of Strategy & Innovation, Fortescue
"Particularly when we look at green metal and decarbonization, there is a lot of opportunity to partner with China. It has some of the leading technology and innovation globally around certain green technology. We also have collaborations with a number of suppliers of different equipment, including solar panels and batteries, not only in terms of that supply, but also looking at how we can jointly innovate to bring the cost of those technologies down, and therefore implement them faster."

Fortescue aims to decarbonize its terrestrial iron ore operations in the Pilbara region by 2030.

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): MITCH STEEL, Mech superintendent of Cloudbreak Operation Processing Facility, Fortescue
"This iron ore, you can see behind me, all three stockpiles are three different products. By 2030, this facility and everything within it, diesel-free, (will be) running on renewables."

The mutually beneficial relationship with China has significantly boosted Fortescue's green metal supply chain as well as Western Australia's economy.

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): BEN KUCHEL, Director of Sales, Marketing and Shipping Metals, Fortescue
"China is, as you all know, our biggest market for iron ore. Given the mutually beneficial relationship between China and Fortescue ever since the start of Fortescue, and it's really been a credit to the attitude of both parties since day one, that we've both brought a genuine respect and a genuine desire to have a mutually beneficial outcome."

SOUNDBITE 4 (English): ROGER COOK, Premier of Western Australia
"Western Australia is the largest producer of iron ore in the world. And China is a key customer for all our major iron ore companies such as BHP, Rio Tinto and Fortescue. And through that great partnership that we have with China, we've been able to significantly boost Western Australia's economy."
