An oncoming train clipped a car and sent it spinning out of control as it tried to cross a railway in Thailand.

CCTV footage shows the locomotive crashing into the black sedan's bonnet and pushing it off the railroad between Muang Railway Station and Tha Rua Noi Railway Station in Kanchanaburi province on October 5.

The vehicle's bonnet hood protector was damaged and the male driver suffered bruised ribs. He was extracted by rescuers from the wrecked car and taken to a hospital for treatment.

Authorities also sent a team to clean the oil spilt on the road to prevent further incidents in the area.

Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Southeast Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
