Birmingham Motorists seemingly hit ‘speeds’ of up to 199mph as speed display sign glitches

A Speed monitor sign has been displaying speeds of up to 199mph as drivers pass on the 30mph road near Cadbury World in Bournville, Birmingham.

Many drivers were seen braking as they saw the ludicrous speed displayed thinking for a moment they had driven at warp speed.

Mavis Bottanon, 82 from Bournville said: ‘The sign has been like that since before Christmas, I spent a good twenty minutes watching it one day, it brings a smile seeing cars or learner drivers passing at around 30 (mph) but the sign says 180mph.’

The display on the sign, on Linden Road, doesn’t show the cars actual speed, like it is designed to, but instead counts from 1mph to 199mph then back down to 1mph, so depending on the time you pass, you could imagine yourself travelling faster than a Formula One driver!

Derek Taylor, 76, who was walking his dog said: ‘There’s definitely a glitch, there’s some along the road that don’t work at all, then this one say’s you are travelling at nearly 200mph, it’s ridiculous, it needs turning off and on again.’

The road sign is close to a primary school, park and the Cadbury chocolate factory in the affluent area of Birmingham.
