Panicked passengers escape from Boeing 737 as engine catches fire before take-off
This is the chaotic moment panicked passengers escaped from a plane that caught fire moments before take-off in Bolivia.
Footage shows the passengers screaming as they clamoured to disembark from the burning Boeing 737 at the Jorge Wilstermann Airport in the Cochabamba Department, on January 27.
Ground crew deployed an emergency slide as flames engulfed one of the engines of the jet, operated by Boliviana de Aviacion.
Authorities said the plane operating flight OB648 was about to depart the runway when the fire erupted. It was bound for the Viru Viru International Airport in the Santa Cruz department with 137 passengers and seven crew members onboard. There were no injuries or casualties reported.
In a statement, Boliviana de Aviacion said: 'After assessing the situation and in coordination with the airport's fire department, the crew decided to evacuate the aircraft as a preventive measure to ensure the safety of all on board.
'Passengers were relocated to the international lounge for evaluation and flight rescheduling. This procedure was carried out strictly following the security protocols established for this type of situation.
'Boliviana de Aviacion (BoA) reiterates its firm commitment to the safety and well-being of our passengers and crew, always prioritising the integrity of operations.'
The plane is the same family of 737s that was involved in the tragic Jeju Air crash in December.
On December 29, 2024, Jeju Air Flight 2216, crashed at the Muan International Airport in South Korea, killing 179 of 181 people onboard. The incident occurred when the plane skidded down the runway and collided with a concrete structure during an emergency landing attempt.
