Hero passersby out on an epic display of teamwork to help lift a car and save a pedestrian who was trapped underneath.

The onlookers rushed to lend a hand when a local was knocked over and slipped under the wheels of the pickup truck upon on the island of Phuket, Thailand, on January 11.

Footage shows the Good Samaritans banding together to heave the modified truck off the ground. There were dozens of them who assisted and the pedestrian was freed in under a minute.

Onlooker Don Attawut said: 'The injured person was hit from behind and somehow slid under the truck. The driver was shaken and could not do anything, he could not reverse in case it hurt the person more.

'Everyone joined together to help lift the car. It saved the person's life.'

The injured local was taken to a hospital, where he was found to have suffered from a broken rib, collarbone, and toe. He spent the next few days recovering before being released.

Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
