China: Baby born fully encased in amniotic sac in rare 1-in-80,000 birth
On February 17, a maternity hospital in Xuzhou, Jiangsu, delivered a remarkable baby. The infant was born via caesarean section, but in an extremely rare occurrence, the amniotic sac remained intact during the procedure. The doctor successfully delivered the baby along with the amniotic fluid, fully encased in the sac. This extraordinary sight led medical staff to nickname the newborn the "shell baby."
Medical personnel stated that this was the first time they had encountered such a unique case in their careers, comparing it to a "real-life Nezha," a mythological figure born encased in a protective membrane. Fortunately, both mother and baby are in good health.
This phenomenon, known as an "en-caul birth," occurs when a baby is born without the amniotic sac rupturing, allowing the infant to emerge with the sac still intact. It is an extremely rare event, occurring in approximately one in 80,000 births.
In ancient times, it was considered a sign of good fortune, with beliefs that such children would lead extraordinary lives. Modern medicine suggests that en-caul births may offer certain protective benefits, reducing pressure and external environmental stress on the newborn during delivery.
Medical experts emphasise that while en-caul births can be beneficial for the baby, their rarity means that healthcare professionals must have extensive clinical experience and expertise to ensure the safety of both mother and child.
