50 Baby Sea Turtles Released into the Ocean: A Beautiful Start to Their Journey
In a heartwarming conservation effort, the forest department successfully released 50 baby turtles, hatched from eggs preserved at the Kodiyakarai Sea Turtle Hatchery, into the sea today. These Olive Ridley sea turtles, known as the "friends of fishermen," play a vital role in maintaining the marine ecosystem by feeding on jellyfish and seaweed that otherwise prey on fish fry.
Every year, from December to February, sea turtles make their way to the shores of Kodiyakarai, near Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district, to lay their eggs. To protect these vulnerable creatures from predators like dog foxes, the forest department carefully collects the eggs and places them in a secure hatchery. The eggs typically hatch in 45 to 55 days. This year, a total of 6150 eggs from 65 turtles have been preserved.
Out of the 60 eggs laid by a turtle on February 4, 50 baby turtles emerged this morning. Forest ranger Ilanchezhiyan, forest guard Satishkumar, and turtle egg collector Nadesan, along with other team members, were present to release the hatchlings into the sea. The baby turtles swam gracefully into the ocean, marking the beginning of their long journey.
It’s remarkable to note that these turtles, which hatched in the same location, will return to the same shores in about 15 years to lay their own eggs, continuing the cycle of life and conservation.
