Police arrested a suspected Chinese fugitive living in luxury at a high-end hotel in Thailand.

Immigration officers converged on the hotel in Bangkok after receiving a tip-off about a Chinese national believed to have illegally entered Thailand.

They raided the building and nabbed Zhang Wei, 30, who was wanted for a 2.4 billion yuan (around 260 million GBP) embezzlement case in his home country.

Footage shows police marching the Chinese suspect out of the swanky hotel in the capital city's Ratchaprasong area on March 21.

Police Major General Prasart Khemaprasit, Commander of Immigration Division 1, said authorities cross-referenced Zhang's profile with their biometric system, and found that his facial features were consistent with a certain 'Du Nan' from the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu.

He said: 'The investigation team jointly concluded that Mr. Zhang Wei and Mr. Du Nan were the same person. We found that his 60-day tourist visa expired on March 12, but he failed to file an extension request Therefore, we monitored his movements at the luxury hotel where he was checked in.

'The surveillance operation continued until March 21, when we found a foreigner matching Zhang Wei's physical characteristics.'

During the arrest, Zhang claimed that he was from Vanuatu - despite protesting his capture in Chinese. He claimed he had lost his passport before showing a photograph of his fake Vanuatu passport as proof of his identity.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Prachya Prasansuk, Deputy Commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, said Zhang was taken into police custody to face illegal entry charges.

He said: 'The arrest was made possible through the use of immigration information technology and biometric systems, which are essential tools that aid officers by providing crucial clues, including reports on the residence of foreigners. This ultimately led to the successful capture of a major international criminal who had fled the country and was using Thailand as a hideout.

'We would like to remind the public, through the media, that reporting the residence of foreigners to the Immigration Bureau is a legal obligation. Homeowners, property occupants and landlors, and hotel managers must be aware of this responsibility and take it seriously.'
