Rare Sumatran tiger cub born at Indonesian zoo, boosting conservation efforts
A critically endangered Sumatran tiger cub has become the newest resident of the Taman Margasatwa dan Budaya Kinantan (TMSBK), also known as Bukittinggi Zoo, located in Bukittinggi city, West Sumatra province, Indonesia.
The female cub, named 'Banun Kinantan', is scheduled for a formal public introduction by the Mayor of Bukittinggi, Ramlan Nurmatias, on April 28, 2025, according to the Head of the Bukittinggi Tourism Office, Rofie Hendria, speaking on Friday (April 18, 2025).
TMSBK Bukittinggi Zoo veterinarian, Dr. Yoli Zulfanedi, stated that Banun Kinantan was born on December 28, 2024, to Sumatran tiger parents Mantagi (10 years old) and Bujang Mandeh (12 years old).
"Banun's birth increases the Sumatran tiger population at TMSBK to eight individuals. This excludes an additional Sumatran tiger currently under observation," explained Dr. Yoli Zulfanedi.
With several successful Sumatran tiger births at the zoo, TMSBK Bukittinggi Zoo, a Conservation Institution under the guidance of the West Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Agency (KSDA), demonstrates its successful role in managing ex-situ (off-site) conservation efforts.
Footage filmed by Amril Sidi, a tiger handler, while playing with and feeding Banun Kinantan in its enclosure on April 16, 2025.
