A plane crashed into homes in California, killing two people onboard.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the aircraft was a Vans RV-10, which had taken off from William J. Fox Airfield in Lancaster and was en route to Camarillo Airport when the tragic incident occurred on May 3.

Both the pilot and a passenger, along with a dog, died in the crash.

The plane struck two homes in the 200 block of High Meadow Street in the Wood Ranch area of Simi Valley, igniting fires in both residences on Saturday afternoon.

Approximately 40 firefighters were dispatched to the scene to extinguish the flames.

Authorities said: 'The structures are both two-story, single-family homes that were impacted by fire and sustained structural damage. The fire has been knocked down and firefighters are working on overhaul and salvage operations.'

Officials also confirmed that residents were inside both homes during the crash but were safely evacuated with no injuries reported.

Aerial footage shows emergency responders deployed at the affected houses.

The operation was conducted under a unified command involving the Simi Valley Police Department, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), and the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.
